Wimbledon is here again, bringing with it the perfect excuse for tucking into some luscious strawberries and cream as you watch the tennis stars wow the crowds. It also marks the season when a fantastic variety of foods reach their peak of perfection. And long, warm summer days tempt you to enjoy your meals outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Eating fruit and vegetables that have been grown this season ensures they’re at their most delicious and colourful – and packed with essential vitamins and antioxidants. Many people also find that eating healthily, especially getting your important five-a-day, often seems easier during the abundant summer months when refreshing fruits and crisp vegetables seem particularly tempting. And at Oakhouse, we offer meals that contain plenty of fresh, seasonal ingredients. So if you’re wondering what’s in season right now, here’s a quick guide to the pick of the crop in June, July and August. Summertime feasts The end of June is when tender British asparagus makes its brief appearance. Try it in our Asparagus & Goat’s Cheese Tart or Smoked Salmon & Asparagus Gratin – perfect for a tasty, alfresco lunch. July welcomes in scarlet strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, plump cherries and luscious peaches. On their own, these fruits can be a tasty, simple snack. They also make mouthwatering, fruity desserts such as Strawberry Cheesecake and Black Forest Gateau. As the temperatures rise, why not treat yourself to a bowl of creamy Vanilla Ice Cream topped with a scattering of juicy raspberries. Broad beans, French beans, garden peas, artichokes, fennel, beetroot, tomatoes, and cucumbers are also at their best around now, along with seafood such as crab and mackerel – a rich source of the essential fatty acid, omega-3. When August arrives, so do courgettes, aubergines and sweet bell peppers, along with beef, delicate scallops and sea bass. It’s easy to see why the summer months put us in the mood for Mediterranean-style meals such as traditional Moussaka with its layers of grilled aubergines and minced lamb. For something sweet, you can nibble to your heart’s content on ripe apricots, blackberries and plums, and our Apricot & Ginger Brulée makes the perfect summer dessert. For something a little bit spicy, Shanghai Beef with its soft, thick noodles and red peppers in a warming ginger and chilli sauce, hits the spot. And what could be more summery than a vibrant salad of sliced tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
