Oakhouse Foods in the News

Oakhouse Foods supports Food Safety Week

Residents at sheltered homes throughout Wales are being given advice on food hygiene and safety by Oakhouse Foods this week as part of Food Safety Week 2010.

During food demonstrations carried out this week, the company is reminding pensioners about the importance of good food hygiene in the home, in particular how to avoid the dangerous listeria bug.  Demonstrations are being carried out at sheltered homes in Cardiff, Swansea, Mold, Brynmawr and Colwyn Bay.

Martin Fido from Oakhouse Foods said, “Research from the Food Standards Agency last year showed a rise in listeria food poisoning amongst the over 60s. We regularly visit sheltered homes and similar throughout the area to cook up our meals and give food tastings. We want to help spread the food safety message as much as we can and so we’re giving out information during our visits.”

Dr Andrew Wadge, Chief Scientist at the Food Standards Agency, said: “The rise in listeria food poisoning among older people is worrying. Listeria can make people very ill and 95% of cases end up needing treatment in hospital.

“There are some really simple steps people can take to prevent getting ill in the first place: be aware that 'use by' dates indicate how long food will remain safe, and then make sure you stick to them; always follow the storage instructions on the label; and make sure your fridge is cold enough – between 0°C and 5°C is ideal.”
